American Savings was originally chartered by Clement B. Knapp, Sr. in 1910 as the First Polish Building & Loan. Over the next 70 years, the deposits of the bank became federally insured and the bank changed its name to American Savings and Loan Association. On March 19, 1987, the bank converted to a federally chartered institution and changed its name to American Savings, FSB under the direction of president Clement B. "Skip" Knapp, Jr.

American Savings serves the financial needs of families and local businesses in its primary market area, Lake County, Indiana, through its main office in Munster and branch offices located in the communities of Hammond, Dyer, and Schererville.

Deposits are insured up to applicable limits by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
