1886 was a year that saw an emergence of new ideas and a growth of new concepts. It had been only twenty-three years since Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and his Raiders had invaded and burned buildings in Salem. Grover Cleveland, the 22nd President of the United States, dedicated the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor and also became the first president to marry while in office. Baseball player Ty Cobb was born. The novel, Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde had been published and was fast becoming a classic. The labor forces were beginning to see the need to unite and the first Parade of the Trades, the oldest in the State of Indiana and the forerunner to the Labor Day holiday, was held in1886 in Princeton, Indiana. Apache Chief Geronimo surrendered to United States Army General Nelson Miles at Skeleton Canyon, Arizona. James A. Naismith didn't invent basketball until 1892 and it wasn't until 1901 that Indiana University won its first ever game, defeating Wabash, 20-17.
In Salem, Indiana, history was also being made. A group of twelve investors saw a need to provide financing for the purchase and the building of homes in the Salem area and founded the Salem Building Loan Fund and Savings Association in April, 1886. The Association remained on the Salem public square for 94 years until its move to the current location at 300 North Water Street in 1980. And, to meet the ever changing needs of the community, we proudly opened our first full-service branch in Orleans, Indiana in late 2000. In January 2007 we opened a temporary branch in Mitchell during the construction of the permanent branch at that location.
Our name has changed several times over the years. In 1964 we changed the name to Salem Savings and Loan Association in an effort to emphasize the need to save for the future; in 1981 to Mid-Southern Federal Savings and Loan Association as a result of converting to a Federal Charter; and, in April 1988, to Mid-Southern Savings Bank, FSB to more accurately describe the evolution of the banking industry and the products and services that are offered today.
Now we live in a changing 21st century and our Board of Directors and employees recognize, as we did in 1886, our customers are the absolute key to our success. We strive to meet their needs and those of the communities where we live and work. Our philosophy is “Banking....the way it used to beâ€.
We are just as dedicated today as in 1886 to provide area residents with financing to purchase their dream home at the most reasonable costs, while offering attractive interest rates on savings and checking accounts and certificates of deposit. As the wants and needs of families have changed throughout the years, it has been our goal to consistently meet those needs with a variety of programs, by providing the personal service our customers deserve and to continue to carry on the family tradition of serving the community. We're proud to be the only locally owned banking institution in the area dedicated to doing just that.
